Haseo is a new player in the popular (as in, one third of the player base of FF14 lol) MMORPG THE WORLD. He encounters two players who start to teach him about the game only to lure him into a dungeon so they can Player Kill him for fun. Why exactly this matters is unclear but it's apparently very scary. They are stopped by ~~Citan Uzuki~~ Ovan (pictured below), who recruits Haseo into his guild, the Twilight Brigade. What follows transpires over the course of a 26 episode prequal anime, .hack//roots, which I won't bother to elaborate the details of here, since the game doesn't. (edited)

The long and short of it is that Haseo develops feelings for the enigmatic guild leader of the twilight Brigade, Shino (who, critically, looks almost exactly like recolored atoli) At some point, Ovan vanished, Shino was player killed by the "player" (obviously some sort of AI, though haseo doesn't know that) known as Tri-Edge (pictured below), which put her in a coma in real and the guild fell apart. Haseo completed a bugged quest that power leveled him to level 133 and, in a frustrated rage he becomes a famous player killer killer, trying to find tri edge. The game opens with Ovan, coming back out of nowhere and telling Haseo that Tri-Edge will show up where he killed shino again. Haseo fights try edge, but also gets killed, but instead of going into a coma finds his level has been reduced to 1, which is how the game proper starts

For a while Haseo just tries to acclimate to his new situation and makes a couple friends to level up with. Atoli tries to befriend haseo but, hearing a weird sound (A Tuning Fork, which is used in .hack to signify BAD AI SHIT COMING YOUR WAY), finds Tri-Edge's...symbol? (below) which sucks them into an out of game area. They encounter these weird black dot things called AIDA and are rescued by the GU guild, which is supposedly a bug fixing project run by the game developers.

They all have these abilities called Avatars, which are more powerful forms for their characters. (the avatars also have a history as the villians--sort of--of the first .hack game. Nobody knows why some characters have avatars, but Haseo has the potential and so joined GU. Currently, he is trying to figure out how to summon his avatar, and failing

Most recently, he realized that the current champion of the PVP arena, Endrance, is an Avatar user and wants to confront him in the arena to learn more about avatars and hopefully summon one. He also saw Endrance hanging out with the AIDA virus during the earlier encounter with atoli, so he wants to interrogate him. This leads to him trying to recruit atoli into his arena team, which leads to the events I talked about last time

The basic tone of the game I want to get across is that

we have a tapestry that is as rich and vivid and as anime as a trails game (as we'll see by the end of it, we got 4 whole games in one here, though they aren't super long individually.) But like, instead of extremely detailed world building the game is instead filled with mental illness
