All the Avatars are the remnant code of these beings from the first game called "epitaphs" that were like the physical form of the overarching villian. Skeith, Haseo's avatar, was the first one that showed up in that game

if robert jordan wrote a fantasy epic that was about how all fantasy stories are basically the same, I am going to one day do the same thing for JRPGs

In the first .hack thing, .hack//sign, there was an annoying PKer named Sora, who was just a constant thorn in everyone's side all series. Basically just a genuine asshole from top to bottom
